Palmerton and Sprint WeekendBlue Mountain Resort , Palmerton PA - 07/14-07/15
This was supposed to be a Super and Sprint weekend, but I have so few Supers this year I decided to run two Super laps and skip the Sunday Sprint. Palmerton was bold place to try it.
This course is tuff and might just be my favorite location. The race starts out with a mile-long hike to the top of the mountain. The sandbag carry and bucket carry are both down and up a steep hill.
Even the barbed wire crawl is up a hill. To top it all off Palmerton has its very own obstacle called the Ape Hanger. It's a rope climb out of the water up onto a suspended rope ladder/monkey bar setup.
Lap 1 went well, but I wasn't paying attention to the time. Has we got close to the end of the course I noticed it was already 2:15. The last wave of the day leaves at 3. I literally finished the race and ran to bag check to get my timing chip. Along the way someone saw me randomly running across the in field area and yelled out a comment about how the race is never over. I guess you had to be there, but it made me laugh. I grabbed my timing chip and then ran to the start line only to see the last wave just left. That wasn't going to stop me. I jumped the starting gate and took off. Lap two proved to be really challenging. Like all Spartan races at ski mountains they really take advantage of the elevation changes. The legs were not happy and threw a few nasty cramps my way to try and end the race. Even with as beat up as I was I still managed to complete most of the obstacles on the second lap. I only failed Twister at the very end and Ape Hanger. Finishing felt like more of an accomplishment than most races. 16 miles and 52 obstacles put a hurting on me, but in a good way. Now I want to push further and for the rest of the season I think I will be doing 2 Super laps whenever possible. It also gave me the crazy idea of signing up for an ultra. So I upgraded my last race of the year from a Beast to an Ultra. November will be here before I know it so I need to really start pushing the training and distance. The 30-mile Ultra will the furthest I have ever run at one time.
Other than having no break in between laps it was a great day. It doesn’t get much better than 6+ hours of OCR. If I can sum up this weekend in a few words it would be "time to pull the trigger on an ultra".
Friday night I camped at Walmart. All these Walmart’s are starting to look the same, but this particular one is way up on top of a hill. I knew right away I had been here before. Turns out it was the same Walmart I stayed at for the PA Savage Race.
The Redbox movie selection was Death Wish 2018 with Bruce Willis. It was a take off of the old Charles Bronson Death Wish movies. Nothing super special about the movie, but I enjoyed it.
As always the three amigos Thor, Dimond, an Nila came along for the race.
Saturday after the race I packed up and drove home.
