Why OCR

I have always just loved obstacle courses. Going all the way back to elementary school I can remember my favorite physical education (PE) activity was obstacle courses. A few times a year they would turn the whole gym into an obstacle course and that would be PE class every day for a week or so.

The other thing I like about these races is how they push your limits. My favorite part is when you hit that point where everything in your body says to stop and you have to push through. I found that in marathon running, but it took a lot of miles to get there and to me flat running is just boring. I found OCRs in 2017 and haven’t looked back.

OCR Cost

Unfortunately, these races aren’t cheap.

For me the biggest expense was kenneling my 3 large dogs. I was basically limited to races close to home to avoid extra days in the kennel and hotel stays. My solution to that was to buy an RV. Now the dogs come with me and I don’t need to stay in hotels. Turns out I also really like camping in the RV. With all the races I am doing the savings per race should pay for the RV in less than 2 race seasons. It is really a win win all the way around. Road trips, camping, hanging with my dogs, and OCRs. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

For the Spartan Races, if you plan to do a lot of races the season pass might be the way to go. The open season pass in 2018 was 750 + processing fees and the elite pass was 1033.97. The season pass doesn’t cover everything. You still have to pay a 15-dollar insurance fee for each race you do and for parking. You do get free bag checks at the race so that does save 5 dollars per event if you bring a bag in with you.

For the Savage Races, the best way to save money is to buy the passes early when they are cheaper. Prices go up the closer to the day of the event. You can also buy passes for future races on site at a discounted rate. Bonus, you get another free tee shirt for buying the pass at the event.

I plan to track most of the expenses for the 2018 season to see just how much it costs. It will also allow me to see just how much the RV is saving me.

OCR Gear

Every Race is different, but here is a list of my go to stuff. If you are doing the Spartan Hurricane Heats, be sure to check the gear list for that race.

  • Normal Races
  • GU Energy Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel
I always carry a few of these with me. Usually down one at the water stations along the course.
  • SaltStick Caps, Electrolyte Replacement Capsules
Cramps suck and these seem to help.
  • French's Mustard Packets
    These also help with cramps.
  • CamelBak Hydration Pack
I no longer run with my own water source. The backpack just tends to annoy me. The races all have water stations and I have just gotten used to downing a few cups of water at each station vs slipping water from a backpack along the route. Staying hydrated is very important, so you may want to start with a Hydration Pack.
  • Hurrican Heat Races
  • Paracord 100'
Didn't end up using it for anything, but it was on NY HH gear list.
  • Glow Sticks
Probably required for all night events.
  • Carabiners
Didn't use these either, but it was on NY HH gear list.
  • Glow Belt
Glow Belt or vest is required for night runs.
  • Head Lamp
Probably required for all night events.

Zone Diet

I have never been into the eating correctly part of being fit. Never really cared and I always assumed I could just eat what ever and work out enough to make up for it. Some how I managed to come across the Zone Diet on youtube. This is a great website for the Zone Diet. Being a diet designed for Cross Fit I thought I would give it a try and the results were fantastic.

On 04/02/18, I had another body pod test done at Under Armour HQ in Baltimore to see where I am at before the start of the race season. They confirmed I lost 10.135 lbs (5.5%) of fat (11 lbs total) in the 2 months I have been on the Zone Diet. That took me from 17.7% body fat down to 12.2. If you are looking for an easy to follow diet to drop fat, I highly suggest it. I don't even follow it 100% of the time. During the week I do okay, but weekends I still eat pretty much whatever. Going to stick with it and see if I can get to the sub 10% body fat. Moral of the story is 6 pack abs are built in the kitchen. I never wanted to admit that, but 2 months on the zone diet did more for my abs than years of working out. You want to get ripped you got to eat right.
